Daniel Radcliffe on Equus is a male figurative painting inspired by Daniel Radcliffe’s stage performance as Alan Strang in the psychological drama Equus.

Radcliffe’s appearance in Equus marked a dramatic departure from the role that had made him famous. In this painting, I interpreted that transformation through my own stylized approach to the male figure, placing the young adult character alongside the powerful image of a white horse.

The figure moves across the composition with his arms extended while the horse emerges dramatically behind him. Their overlapping forms create a strong visual connection between man and animal, reflecting the horse imagery that is so central to Equus. Against the nearly black background, the pale figure and luminous white horse appear almost suspended in darkness.

The character is presented completely nude, referencing the vulnerability and provocative theatricality associated with Radcliffe’s adult stage performance. Rather than recreating a specific moment from the production, the painting transforms that inspiration into a fantasy composition focused on the exposed human form, movement, and the psychological connection between the young man and the horse.

Created with acrylic and ink, Daniel Radcliffe on Equus combines bold graphic outlines, carefully modeled anatomy, pale flesh tones, and cool whites and grays. The restrained palette contrasts dramatically with the deep black background, allowing both the figure and horse to command the composition.
